FDA Approves Nexium I.V. for Treating GERD in children and young adults

In the USA the Food and Drug Administration association (FDA) has approved Nexium I.V. (AstraZeneca) to treat children older than 1 month who have gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) with erosive esophagitis. Nexium I.V. is the first proton pump inhibitor approved for children under 1 year old.

To treat pediatric GERD, families are first encouraged to try lifestyle modifications, such as smaller, more frequent feedings or dietary changes. Nexium I.V., an alternative to oral therapy when oral therapy is not possible or appropriate, must be administered in the hospital by a health care professional. The drug is intended for short-term use only; treatment with the drug for more than 10 days has not been studied.
