Usage survey for Buscopan
The anti-cholinergic drug, hyoscine-n-butylbromide [Buscopan®, Boehringer Ingelheim GmbH] is a smooth muscle relaxant regularly used in endoscopic procedures to reduce gastrointestinal spasm.
Advocates of the use of Buscopan®, believe that its use facilitates ERCP, colonoscopy [including terminal ileal intubation] and increased detection of colorectal adenomas.
Current British Society of Gastroenterology guidelines state that a past medical and drug history should be obtained from all patients before commencing any procedure and that Buscopan® should be used with caution or avoided in patients with a history of angle-closure glaucoma.
BSGE wish to contact members of the British Society of Gastroenterology about their use of Buscopan®. This contact, via the use of a survey, will help the Society obtain a better understanding of how this drug is used. Head to the bsg.org.uk website to take part in the survey.
